There is growing evidence that a human-centered, behavioral approach should be pursued to educate, inform, and motivate energy efficient human behaviors. Research findings suggest that intervention strategies to promote sustainable behaviors could result in major energy savings.

In 2007, the Brainshift Foundation launched the Energy Smackdown -- a pilot program for reducing energy use in Massachusetts communities. The program achieved reductions in energy use among the target population of 14% for electric power and 17% for natural gas over one year. That is 2-3 times what is expected for programs of its type.

b.shift intends to build on the success of the Energy Smackdown by providing partner organizations with an innovative change and adoption environment that is effective and affordable.
