The National Training Laboratories Institute for Applied Behavioral Science, in a study evaluating the impact of instructional media on retention, found that learners remember only 5% of what they hear in a lecture, 10% of what they read, 20% of what they review in computer-based training, 50% if they participate in a discussion group, and 75% if they do the job themselves, even if they do it as a simulation.
